Ryan Wolking of the Los Alamos Police Department was promoted from detective to sergeant during a special ceremony Friday afternoon at the Los Alamos Justice Center.

“I’m excited,” Wolking told the Los Alamos Daily Post. “I’m looking forward to learning new things and I am looking forward to the challenge. I think it will be a good change of pace and a good thing for my career.”

As a sergeant, Wolking said he will manage a team of officers, respond to 911 calls, handle DWI enforcement and traffic enforcement and investigate cases.

Wolking has worked at the Los Alamos Police Department for seven years. He started in March 2014 as a corporal and was promoted to detective in 2016. The following year, he earned the Detective of the Year award. Prior to working in Los Alamos, Wolking said he served four years as a state trooper for the Kentucky State Police.

A career in law enforcement suits him, Wolking said, adding that the typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. desk job isn’t his style. Wolking said he appreciates that every day is different as well as the opportunity to pursue justice, figure out problems and help people in different situations.

He added that he enjoys being a part of the local police department.

“I enjoy working together on our common mission, which is keeping the community free of crime and free of the fear of crime,” Wolking said. “I like how everyday can bring a new challenge … I enjoy having the freedom to do a job that each day dictates.”

Wolking credited his family and colleagues for helping him be successful in the department.

“Definitely the support of my wife and family,” he said. “The training opportunities that we had, the commanders and friends that we have at the police department (helped, too). I’ve been blessed to have some very good, helpful and passionate supervisors at the police department.”

Police Chief Dino Sgambellone commended Wolking for his work.

“Ryan represents the best we have to offer with respect to a service-driven work ethic,” Sgambellone said. “His former experience as a State Trooper and his recent assignment as a Detective will serve him well as he leads his patrol team. We’re excited to see how Ryan’s leadership positively impacts the citizens of Los Alamos.”

Wolking and his family live in White Rock. When not on the job he said he enjoys spending time with friends and family and taking advantage of the many outdoor amenities in the area.
