LAPD-LAFD Battle Of The Badges Benefits Special Olympics

LAPD News:

On Friday, Feb. 7 from 5-7 p.m., Los Alamos Police Officers will battle Los Alamos Firefighters in a game of broomball. The community’s finest will suit up to play a charity event at Los Alamos County Ice Rink to benefit local Special Olympic athletes.

What is Broomball? Broomball is like ice hockey but without skates—what could go wrong!?

Opening Ceremonies will begin at 5:15 p.m. Honor Guard, Bagpipers and Special Olympic athletes will present the “Flame of Hope” torch to begin the Broomball game. LAPD and LAFD will compete for the coveted traveling trophy, all while providing entertainment for those who come to support these  amazing athletes.

“Los Alamos Police and Fire Departments have long supported Special Olympics New Mexico (SONM) and our local athletes. The Special Olympics provides amazing opportunities for athletes and their families. Please consider attending or donating to this event,” said Det. Cindy Garcia, LAPD Coordinator for SONM.

The event will raise money through selling concessions, merchandise, taking donations, a half-time raffle and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympic athletes. Volunteers will be accepting cash, card and checks made out to “Special Olympics New Mexico” or “SONM”.

About the Special Olympics:

The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
