John Sarrao has been selected as SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s sixth director. He will be leaving Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in mid-September for this exciting new opportunity.
Sarrao has served as the deputy director for Science, Technology, and Engineering overseeing the directorates for Chemistry, Earth & Life Sciences; Global Security; Physical Sciences; and Simulation & Computation as well as the Partnerships and Pipeline Office since the Triad transition.
His personal research and technical leadership career emphasize national security science from plutonium physics research to advanced materials design and discovery to stewarding LANL’s high performance computing resources and simulation capabilities. He has served as a champion for the postdoc and student pipelines and for multiple diversity and inclusion efforts throughout his years at the Lab.
“Throughout his career, John has provided passionate and dedicated service by way of his leadership and management of our Laboratory and through his thoughtful stewardship of our STE portfolio,” Director Thom Mason said. “His successful career, which started as a LANL student, is testament to the great opportunities that working at a national laboratory can provide. Please join me in congratulating John on his new position. While he will be greatly missed at our Lab, I am very proud to see him deservedly join the ranks of the national laboratory directors.”
A search will be initiated soon for Sarrao’s replacement. An acting DLDSTE will be named as Sarrao’s departure date approaches.
