  • Department of Labor should delay new rule that could jeopardize benefits for those who worked at Cold War-era sites

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Tom Udall, D-N.M., and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., this week urged the U.S. Department of Labor to delay a new rule that could make it more difficult for sick nuclear workers who served at Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Y-12 and other Cold War-era nuclear sites to get benefits they deserve under the department’s Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program.

Roger This: Safety At LANL

By ROGER SNODGRASS
Los Alamos Daily Post

Nuclear waste and wildland fire make a wicked cocktail. But if the nuclear waste contains ignitable chemicals that might spontaneously erupt, spewing sparks and radioactive materials in the vicinity of canisters containing similar concoctions, then that very well might call for extraordinary vigilance.

Last week, the Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board paid a visit to Northern New Mexico, seeking assurances that the issue of wildfire at Los Alamos National Laboratory was adequately addressed and that the federal managers and lab contractors

LANL: Holistic Data Analysis And Modeling Poised To Transform Protein X-ray Crystallography

Conventional protein X-ray diffraction images are processed to remove the sharp Bragg reflections, producing noisy images of diffuse intensity, left. Images from multiple crystal orientations are integrated into a 3-D dataset in which the signal is statistically averaged (center, showing a level surface of diffuse intensity in three-dimensions). The 3-D data show greatly enhanced diffuse features, as seen in simulated diffraction images obtained using the integrated data (right, compare to left panel). The 3-D data are used to validate and  refine models of protein motions. Read More

WIPP Ends Safety Pause

WIPP News:

A safety pause, declared by Nuclear Waste Partnership in response to air quality issues in two remote areas of the WIPP underground, was ended and normal work in these areas has resumed.

The pause began Feb. 22 after workers detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in two areas at extreme ends of the underground. The pause allowed time to thoroughly investigate each event while work in un-impacted portions of the WIPP underground continued.

We are learning from operating experience and continuing to improve our programs and processes to better Read More
