LANL Invites Public to Informational Meeting

LANL News:

  • Los Alamos National Laboratory Hazardous Waste Facility Permit EPA ID No. NM0890010515

The community is invited to comment on a draft Class 2 permit modification prepared by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and participate in an informational public interest meeting.

The document linked below is a draft Class 2 modification request to change the LANL Hazardous Waste Facility Permit issued to the U.S. Department of Energy and Los Alamos National Security, LLC (collectively the Permittees.)

Due to the New Mexico Environment Department – Hazardous Waste Bureau (NMED-HWB) recommendation, the Permittees have determined to hold a pre-application public meeting and welcome technical as well as general comments from members of the public from Feb. 27 through March 14.

DRAFT FOR PUBLIC REVIEW: Class 2 Permit Modification Request

Please note that this draft permit modification is NOT FINAL and has not been formally submitted to the NMED-HWB for approval. Permittees intend to submit a formal Class 2 permit modification request after consideration of public comments solicited during this pre-application comment period. Upon formal submittal of this Class 2 modification to the NMED-HWB, the public may be afforded additional opportunities to comment.

Comments submitted to the Permittees during this time period does not constitute submittal to NMED-HWB’s administrative record regarding any version of this draft modification that may be subsequently submitted to NMED-HWB for approval.

The Class 2 modification will allow container storage capacity increases at the permitted units located at TA-54-38, West Indoor Unit and Outdoor Pad (or the RANT facility), increases the footprint of the TA-54-38 Indoor Unit, and clarifies various minor language inconsistencies within the Permit.

To approve this permit modification, NMED-HWB must determine that the modification request is complete and meets appropriate environmental standards under the New Mexico Hazardous Waste Act and regulations.

Comments can be submitted at the email address below and at the public interest meeting to be held:

  • Thursday, March 14 , 2013
  • 3-5 p.m.
  • Northern New Mexico Citizens’ Advisory Board Office
  • 94 Cities of Gold Road Pojoaque, N.M.

To confirm attendance to the meeting, comment, or if you have questions, please contact LANL at 505-667-0216 or envoutreach@lanl.gov.
