LAMS Takes First At MathCounts Chapter 2023 Competition

LAMS News:

The 2023 MathCounts Chapter competition for Northern New Mexico was held at Pojoaque High School Saturday, Feb. 11.

The Los Alamos Middle School (LAMS) sent a team of four Mathletes to compete, as well as four individual Mathletes.

The Middle School team took first place in this competition. Team members are Julia Zou, Ming-Xiu Lo, Anders Medin, and Tate Plohr. The top three finishers in the written contest were Lo (first), Medin (second), and Julia Zou (third). The top finishers in the Jeopardy-style Countdown Round were Plohr (first) and Lo (third).

They will compete in the MathCounts State Competition in Albuquerque March 11.

The Middle School MathCounts coaches are Phuong Nguyen and Colter Spearing.

The Mountain School team was comprised of Yuiko Yamaguchi, Linus Plohr, Adrian Medin, and Chelsea Nguyen. Mountain took second place and is now qualified for the State competition, where they will be competing against other students statewide. Yuiko Yamaguchi, Adrian Medin, and Chelsea Nguyen placed in the top 16 and competed in the final, fast-paced Countdown Round. Adrian Medin placed 2nd on the Countdown Round. Congratulations to the Mountain School team on their performance.

The Mountain School MathCounts coaches are Scott Smith and Jane Lataille.

The Barranca Mesa Elementary team was comprised of Elliot Lara, Alexander Sandborgh, Sylvia Stanek, and Haley Bishofberger. Barranca Mesa Elementary team took fourth place.
