After the start of the war in Ukraine, I prepared a Powerpoint presentation about the war and visited all social studies classes at Los Alamos Middle School (LAMS).

Most students were deeply moved by what they heard, and wanted to support Ukraine. The first thing they did was sign for me a huge poster with words of encouragement and support and secretly hang it in my office. I was deeply touched by this kind gesture.

At the end of March, the LAMS speech and debate team (The Hawktalkers), guided and inspired by their wonderful teacher Sherri Bublitz, launched a PVPC (Powerful Voices, Powerful Change) project in support of the millions of Ukrainian refugees. They decided to raise money as a school and get supplies for the refugees.

Their first step was to raise awareness and to ask each homeroom class to create sunflower cutouts, drawings, or colorings in support of the refugees from Ukraine. They have chosen sunflowers as it’s Ukraine’s national flower. As a result, a beautiful sunflower wall appeared in the main hall at LAMS.

The second step was a bake sale held at the school April 28 and at the high school parking lot April 30. Both teachers and students donated homemade baked goods, as well as a cake for the cake auction. As a result, $1,000 was raised. The money will be donated to the Vienna Mission for Ukraine (https://vm4u.org).

With the money from the bake sale, the class will be purchasing items directly from their Amazon wishlist that will then be used to help the refugees.
