Los Alamos Medical Center (LAMC) Interim CEO Tracy Stratton recently announced her commitment to provide obstetrics services in Los Alamos and today she introduces OBGYN Dr. Sharon Ransom as the newest member of the medical staff at LAMC.

Dr. Ransom replaces her friend Dr. Brenda Pareda who left the position last month, and spoke about what drew her to want to practice medicine in Los Alamos.

“I was attracted to work at Los Alamos Medical Center through my connection with Dr. Brenda Pereda,” Dr. Ransom said. “We have been friends since 2017. We were in communication during her transition from UNM Medical School, where she was an attending and Dean of Diversity. Dr. Pereda was very enthusiastic about LAMC and when I began my Locum Tenens career, she was instrumental in making Los Alamos one of my first assignments.”

LAMC Interim CEO Tracie Stratton spoke about the addition of Dr. Ransom to the medical staff.

“We are very excited to have a commitment from Dr. Ransom to continue providing high quality patient care to the women of Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico,” Stratton said. “Dr. Ransom has been such a wonderful addition to the medical staff. She has integrated herself very well into the organization and is well respected by staff and patients. We know the importance of the OB service line to our community, and we will continue to focus on the services we provide to ensure we are meeting the needs. Thank you for your patience and trust in us in the delivery of care.”

Dr. Ransom spoke about her philosophy regarding patient care and support.

“My personal philosophy is based upon the fundamental understanding that all women want access to quality healthcare,” she said. “My job as a healthcare practitioner is to listen to each person without bias or judgement and collaborate with them to develop a plan that achieves their wellness goal.”

When asked what the hardest part is of being an OBGYN, Dr. Ransom was thoughtful in her response.

“The most difficult aspect of being an OBGYN is the recognition that my commitment to providing quality care for each patient is sometimes compromised by forces beyond the scope of basic healthcare practices,” she said.

What is really great about practicing her line of work, Dr. Ransom said, is interacting with her patients.

“The best part of being an OBGYN is engaging with patients face-to-face every day, connecting with women, listening to their concerns, their stories, and collaborating with them to achieve their healthcare goals,” she said.

Dr. Ransom said she is still exploring and learning about the Los Alamos Community.

“My first visit to the Mesa Public Library was quite an experience. I was very impressed by the architectural design and the eager assistance offered by the library staff,” she said. “I love the Canyon Rim Trail, learning about the history of Los Alamos, and seeing the community through the eyes and knowledge of the community.”

Dr. Ransom is a board-certified OBGYN with more than 25 years of experience. She said that she is passionate about women’s health and access to reproductive health. Her commitment and advocacy for access to quality health care for women in rural communities, and her love of travel, has led her to practice in rural Indiana, Ohio, New Zealand and Ethiopia.

She recently joined the Southwest Women’s Law Center as a board member and chairperson for their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee. Her work to ensure equity in reproductive health also extends to advocacy for women with disabilities. She developed an awareness of the unintended barriers to health for disabled women over the course of her career.

Dr. Ransom was born and raised in Detroit, Mich. She attended Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and completed her residency in Human Medicine at EW Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich.

Currently living in Corrales with her husband Peter Gooch, Dr. Ransom said she finds the 90-minute drive non-stressful and easy to accommodate her schedule. Her husband recently retired as a professor of Visual Arts and Design at the University of Dayton. He is a professional artist (painter) and published author.

Dr. Ransom has four grown children from a previous marriage and three granddaughters. In her spare time, Dr. Ransom founded the International Partnership for Reproductive Health. A 501c3 nonprofit with a focus on cervical cancer screening in Ethiopia. She enjoys gardening, cooking and reading good books. She also is writing a book based on her experiences as an OBGYN.

Dr. Ransom is accepting new patients for OBGYN services. To make an appointment, please call her office at 505.661.9201.
