SPORTS News:
 
Strong winds couldn’t hold back the Los Alamos High School Track & Field athletes at Friday and Saturday’s 2-5A District Championship in Albuquerque. Both ‘Topper Boys and Girls teams are District Champions.
 
The ‘Toppers qualified many additional individuals and relays for next Friday/Saturday’s State Championship at UNM.
 
Boys qualifying for State by virtue of achieving a qualifying mark or finishing first or second in this weekend’s competition include Miroslav Betts and Nathaniel Ortega in the 400, Chris Buntain in the 800 and 1600, Kai Coblentz in the 1600 and 3200, Connor Bailey in the 3200, Elijah Velasquez in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and triple jump, Liam Johnson in the pole vault, Stephan Brenner in the shot put and discus, Macklin Cunico in the discus and javelin, the 4×400 relay team (Nathaniel Ortega, Hayden Walker, Koby Cotter, and Ben Schauer), and the 1600 medley relay team (Leander Murphy, Nathaniel Ortega, Miroslav Betts, and Hayden Walker).
 
Other ‘Toppers have qualified for State in previous meets and other events.

Girls qualifying for State by virtue of achieving a qualifying mark or finishing first or second in this weekend’s competition include Celeste Levy in the 100, Claire Ticknor in the 200, Elena Abeyta in the 400, Sydney Schake and Maddie Beck in the 800, Maddy Foley, Talia Dreicer, and Sophia Galvez in the 1600, Morgan Apperson and Paulina Burnside in the 3200, Emily Mercer in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Jazmine Tuning and Syndey Schoonover in the high jump, Fiona Rogers and Jillian Bennett in the pole vault, Liz Lockhart in the long jump and triple jump, Sophie Wood in the long jump and triple jump, Elena Abeyta in the long jump, Zoe Challacombe in the shot put and discus, Rebecca Green in the shot put, Shannon Irwin in the javelin, the 4×100 relay (Elena Abeyta, Claire Ticknor, Liz Lockhart, and Celeste Levy), the 4×200 relay (Celeste Levy, Emily Mercer, Liz Lockhart, and Claire Ticknor), the 4×400 relay (Alyssa Parker, Maddy Foley, Sienna Ahlers, and Talia Dreicer), and the 1600 medley relay (Sophie Wood, Sienna Ahlers, Maddie Beck, and Sophia Galvez).

Head Coach Paul Anderson said he was very impressed by everyone’s willingness to compete despite heavy winds. 

β€œIt’s a tribute to everyone on the team and everyone contributed to our 17th consecutive team title,” Anderson said.
