LAHS Swimmers Earn Several Wins At APS Year End Invitational Saturday

The Los Alamos High School swimming teams earned top scores at the APS Year End Invitational Saturday at West Mesa High School in Albuquerque.

The Hilltoppers won the boys team title over Albuquerque High by a 525 to 435 count, while the girls got second to the state champ Eldorado Eagles, 641-508.

The meet was a last tune-up before the Hilltoppers host the District I Swimming and Diving Championships at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center Friday and Saturday. Senior Michael Moore remains undefeated in individual events this season in his final campaign for the Hilltoppers. He captured both the 100 butterfly (53.26) and the 200 freestyle (1:44.91), ahead of teammates Kaan Unal and Senior Co-Captain Max Reidys. Moore’s time in the 200 free moves him up to third on the All-Time Hilltoppers list.

Freshman Alana Goodwin, Sophomore Jesse Liechty and Sophomore Caemlyn Tripp swept the top three spots in the 500 free. Goodwin’s clocking of 5:46.75 qualified her for the state championships to be held Feb. 20-21 at Albuquerque Academy.

Sophomore Jake Hollis had a big drop from his personal best to win the 100 meter breast stroke in 1:06.33 and qualify for his first-ever state meet swim. The Hilltoppers also won the girls 100 breast when Sophmore Kaitlin Bennett touched first in 1:12.91. Earlier in the meet, her second place time in the 50 free (25.45) moved her into the top 10 All-Time Hilltoppers list for the first time.

Sophmore Jessica Moore edged down her 100 free seasonal best with a 56.93 winning effort. Junior Nathan Scrimshaw, a hurdler-turned-sprinter, continued his rapid ascent in the 50 free despite a wrist injury. Co-Captain Izzy Runde, normally a backstroker, shrugged off a sore shoulder to pick up a third place in the breaststroke.

Other Topper qualifiers for the state meet included Unal (200 free) and Alex Jaegers (50 free). Senior Michelle Penderson became the third Topper to qualify for the one-meter diving on Friday night.
