It started with a field trip last fall with his Sports Lit class that Los Alamos High School (LAHS) junior Andy McBride felt drawn to join the Los Alamos Daily Post news team.

“I really liked how the discussion about journalism went during the field trip and I have always wanted to be a writer,” McBride said. “When I was really young I wrote stories about a hero I created named ‘Change Boy’ … he could change into anything and was the balance of the world … he helped everybody. That’s what I want to do – help people.”

In early February McBride returned to the Post and asked to work after school at the paper. He was hired  Feb. 5 and primarily writes stories about teachers, students and staff at LAHS.

“I am thrilled that our Sports Lit field trip to the Los Alamos Daily Post sparked an interest in journalism for Andy,” Sports Lit Teacher Lori Thompson said. “As his teacher, I’m proud of the quality writing and articles he is publishing. Keep up the great work, Andy!”

McBride played football and basketball after moving with his family to Los Alamos in August 2022. The family moved from Parks, La., after his father Albert McBride accepted an engineering position at Los Alamos National Laboratory. His mother Emily McBride now teaches biology at LAHS. His brother Ben McBride, a senior, played varsity basketball this year for the Hilltoppers.

McBride spoke about his impressions of Los Alamos.

“The views are very beautiful here, especially early in the morning with all the colors in the sky,” he said. “The most challenging thing about moving here is being away from everything I’m used to back in Louisiana.”

McBride also spoke about his experience at LAHS.

“The best thing about the high school is the inclusion of all the kids,” he said. “I especially like Mr. Pomeroy’s Auto Shop class … I feel like I fit in there.”

McBride said that he plans to go to college in Louisiana and study journalism and law enforcement. Upon graduation he intends to join the United States Air Force.

“In the mean time, I look forward to meeting more people as I continue writing for the Los Alamos Daily Post,” McBride said.
