Born and raised in Roswell, Cpl. Amos Smith from the Los Alamos Police Department has a story.

He is creating a safe place for students at Los Alamos High School (LAHS) working as the School Resource Officer (SRO).

Starting with the New Mexico Game and Fish, Smith had a purpose as a Game Warden for 14 years. He then worked for the Los Alamos Police Department as a patrol officer for four years before transferring to the SRO position at Los Alamos Public Schools.

He started as an SRO for the elementary schools first, then from there moved to the high school. Smith said he transferred because it was a better fit for him and he could make better connections with the students at LAHS to help the high schoolers more.

“What I do at my job is protect staff and students and foster relationships between the Police Department and community to educate students on current topics and questions about the law and government,”  Smith said. “As well as enforce laws that apply to school campuses.”

Not only is he a hero on the job but Smith is a husband and father of five children. He loves to spend time with his family and work on old vehicles, he said.

One life lesson Smith said he has learned and loves to teach everybody around him is “life is about relationships and how you interact with people will influence all of your future interactions with them.”

“Treating people with respect and dignity even in a low moment will shape how they interact with you in the future,” he said.

Smith said the main reason he joined law enforcement was to be able to help other people, adding that is why he transitioned to serve as an SRO.
