LAPS News:

Jackie Cooke, a recent graduate of Los Alamos High School, traveled to Washington, D.C. as part of a national student delegation to meet with Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich as well as Rep. Ben Ray Lujan.

In conversations with the senators and congressman, Cooke championed the causes of public education.

Among a variety of educational policy topics discussed, were how schools could be transformed through technology and the impact of sequestration. 

She also encouraged New Mexico’s legislators to fully fund special education and allow more flexibility and decision making at the local level.

This marked the second year that Cooke traveled to Washington, D.C. to discuss educational issues with New Mexico’s Congressional Delegation. 

Los Alamos’ youngest educational policy wonk plans to attend New Mexico State University to major in electrical engineering or science. She credits her participation on the Los Alamos High School robotics team for her interest in engineering.
