LAFD News:

The Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) will be testing fire hydrants throughout Los Alamos County through October.

The purpose of hydrant testing is to ensure that they will provide an adequate water supply for fire suppression and to flush out sediments that have accumulated in the water distribution system over the past year. These tests are part of the regular hydrant maintenance program and are done in conjunction with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU).

LAFD firefighters and vehicles will be visible throughout the community flowing water from the hydrants while they are conducting these tests.

There may be some discoloration in residential water due to the amount and volume of water being flowed when the hydrants are being tested in the various neighborhoods. Should this occur, simply run the cold water spigot outside the home for a few minutes and this will usually resolve this issue. LAFD recommends not washing laundry until the water runs clear. If the discolored water does not run clear after a few minutes, call DPU, using the Customer Care Center, dialing 311 from a landline or 505.662.8333 from a cell phone.
