LACDC Board Endorses UNM-LA Mil Levy Tax Increase

LACDC News:

The Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corporation (LACDC) Board of Directors today announced its support of the proposed mil levy increase designed to fund programs at The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos.

The 2-mil operational increase, scheduled for vote by Sept. 17, will boost UNM-LA’s ability to produce science, technology, engineering, and math students that are vital to our unique local economy. LACDC recognizes UNM-LA’s impact on the community at large that is showcased by a wide range of benefits including its partnership with Los Alamos High School to provide dual-credit, exceptional programs in fire-science, and numerous continuing education options.

Additionally, resources for local businesses would be supported by the funds – directly in line with LACDC’s goals to support a thriving local economy.

“The Chamber of Commerce is proud to support the University of New Mexico in its efforts to remain strong in Los Alamos,” said Katy Korkos, manager of the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce, “We regularly take advantage of many of the services that UNM-LA offers, from classroom space to computer lab training to professional development and enrichment classes. UNM-LA’s partnership with the Small Business Development network means that businesspeople can receive free confidential business counseling throughout the lifetime of each business.”

As one of the major employers in the community, with 183 full and part-time employees, LACDC sees value in working toward sustainable fiscal support of our community college.

The Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce will hold a business breakfast at 7:30 a.m., Sept. 5 at UNM-Los Alamos in the Student Services Building. The breakfast will be an informational meeting and discussion on the topic of the mil levy election.
