LAAC News:

The 30th Annual Los Alamos Kite Festival is just a little over a month away and the Los Alamos Arts Council (LAAC) is partnering with Century Bank Los Alamos as the title sponsor for this milestone anniversary.

“When we met with Century Bank representative, Koryn, in the fall to discuss our partnership for our first annual Pajarito Literary Festival this October, we had mentioned the shortfall we had run up against for our Kite Fest,” LAAC Executive Director Brandi Engeman said. “Koryn went to her board and secured additional funding for our annual partnership and we couldn’t be more grateful for their support.”

Kite Festival will be held April 25-26 at Overlook Park this year, with a small change in the main field from the Spirio Soccer Fields, which are currently undergoing renovations, to the Dara Jones Fields.

LAAC will have main kite building workshops under the big tent, a host of visiting informational booths, kite hospitals at each end of the field, and a volunteer tent provided by Century Bank.

Children of all ages are invited to join the workshops from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with self-guided kite building until 3 p.m. each day. Thanks to the generosity of Century Bank, LAAC will have free shirts for the first 250 kids who build kites with us.

Kite Festival Schedule:

  • Saturday, April 25
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kite building workshops with volunteers
  • 2-3 p.m. Self-guided building workshops
  • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kite Flying

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kite hospitals open for business

Elementary school art or science teachers who would like kite decorating kits delivered to their classrooms are invited to contact info@laac-flac.org no later than April 15. LAAC will have a volunteer drop the kites off to the teachers’ campuses the week of April 20 and teachers will need to deliver those back to LAAC staff by Friday, April 24, it can have them on site for the kids to pick up, grab a shirt, and fly! The Arts Council will keep the rest of the kite kit, so kids must be on site to get their kite, and finish building them, but the decorating and a lesson on kite history and flying information can be done in class as a group.

LAAC gives a special thanks to the other community partners making Kite Festival a reality for kids of all ages this year; Janet Lovato at Exit Realty, Medical Associates of Northern NewMexico, SALA, Kokopilates, and Dr. Elena McAtee with Sol Direct Primary Care for their business partnerships this year, and to the volunteers who make flight possible!
