Los Alamos resident Kelly Benner is the winner of the top photo of the quarter published as a Daily Postcard in the Los Alamos Daily Post newspaper.
When she submitted her photograph, “Luminarias,” which depicts lit farolitos at the Jemez Springs Historic Site, Benner said she was so pleased and hadn’t realized it would be included in the contest.
“I love that; it is very exciting.”
The photo contest was started when Los Alamos residents Robert and Ann Wells established a fund at the Los Alamos Arts Council. The purpose of the fund is to award a prize of $100 to the photographer who submits the best photo of the quarter published in the Los Alamos Daily Post.
The Wells asked that a panel of three photographers be chosen, one by Robert and Ann, one by the staff of the Los Alamos Daily Post and one by the Los Alamos Arts Council. The judges are: Ken Hanson, TK Thompson and Dean Carstens. All three are well known photographers in the area.
The judges evaluated pictures submitted to the Los Alamos Daily Post between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2016.
Thompson said they received more than 100 photographs for their consideration but Benner’s photograph stood out. “It was more than just a pretty photograph,” he said. “It had guts, in my opinion.” The lit farolitos decorating the ruins of the Spanish mission brought out a spiritual aspect to the image, Thompson said.
Carstens agreed that Benner’s picture had a lot of great qualities. “We all agreed that this was the best. Nice composition and nice color,” he said.
Next, the judges will evaluate photos submitted by the public and published in the Los Alamos Daily Post during the first quarter of this year, which ends March 31 … so submit your best shots of local area subjects to email@example.com.
