Los Alamos’ softball team had little trouble upending the Pojoaque Valley Elkettes in both ends of their doubleheader Saturday.
The Hilltoppers rolled to an 11-1 victory in game one, then followed that up with a 12-0 victory in game two. That doubleheader, which was broadcast on the Los Alamos Daily Post’s YouTube channel, was played at Hope Field in White Rock.
With those two wins, the Hilltoppers retained their hold on second place in the District 2-4A standing.
The Hilltoppers are now at the halfway point of their district season and trail Moriarty in the standings.
In game one, Los Alamos (12-6 overall, 5-1 in district) scored 10 runs in the first three innings and closed out the contest by pushing a run across in the fifth inning.
Pojoaque Valley (4-11 overall, 1-3 in district) managed just one hit in the game off of Hilltopper starting pitcher Nadia Cedillo. Cedillo struck out 8 batters in 5 innings to pick up the victory.
Offensively, Cedillo and Mikiaela Guillen both went yard, with Cedillo hitting a lead-off home run to get the Hilltoppers started on the right foot. Guillen, who went 3-for-3 Saturday, drove in 5 runs in game one.
Abigail DeHerrera had a big showing for Los Alamos at the plate, as well. She went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and scored twice.
Cedillo, Sydney Kitts, Hannah Bergeman and Reyna Naranjo all had multiple hit in the first game.
In game two, the Hilltoppers scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of 6 bases on balls and 3 hit batsmen. Naranjo had a two-run double during the big first frame.
DeHerrera came up with a triple and drove in 3 runs in the second game.
Los Alamos’ offense has been outstanding so far this season, producing 172 runs and posting a team batting average of .367.
The Hilltoppers have a nondistrict game scheduled Monday against Sandia, then return to 2-4A play Saturday when they host Española Valley. They will face the first-place Pintos April 22 in a doubleheader in Moriarty.
