KIWANIS News:

The Kentucky Derby is almost here!

Grab your hat and enjoy the Big Race while helping to Eliminate Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus.

The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos welcomes you to join in the fun 3:30-5:30 p.m., Saturday, May 2 at the annual Kentucky Derby Party. This year the new Cottonwood on the Greens at the Los Alamos Golf Course will host the event to include a Derby-inspired buffet, mint juleps, cocktails, a Derby hat contest, kids activities, large screen viewing, and 50/50 betting on the big race!

All proceeds from the event will benefit Project Eliminate, a partnership between Kiwanis and UNICEF to combat maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) across the globe. Through education, outreach, and mass immunization, great strides have been made to eliminate MNT in 35 countries. However, 24 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, the joy of birth turns into tragedy as MNT kills one baby every 11 minutes.

These tiny babies suffer an unimaginable death from ongoing painful convulsions coupled with extreme sensitivity to light and touch, making it impossible to comfort them. This can all be prevented with three doses of a 60 cent immunization given to the mother, who then passes on the immunity to their future babies.

Since 1999, UNICEF and its partners have immunized nearly 100 million women and have eliminated the disease in 35 countries. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.

Tickets are $50 per adult ($25 tax deductible) and include a buffet dinner & 1 drink ticket, $40 per adult ($20 tax deductible) without a drink ticket and $15 per child.
