At Monday evening’s Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos dinner meeting, Kiwanian Kate Cleveland and Dr. Elena McAtee described their support group “Navigating Zepbound and Wegovy”. Weight loss drugs using GLP-1 are becoming readily available, and they are effective in treating obesity, cardiovascular conditions, and even sleep apnea.

The speakers began by showing how the drugs affect the brain, the pancreas and the stomach.

The support group provides a supportive community where folks can connect with other people and the same journey. Cleveland and Dr. McAtee offer participants guidance and insights from a physician and a health coach. They provide real strategies where members can learn practical ways to manage side effects, improve nutrition and stay active.

Cleveland said that as a nutrition coach, she has met folks who are “checking all the boxes” and getting frustrated because they are not losing weight. The weight loss drugs help folks get over the hump and begin losing weight.

The support group meets at 11 a.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the Unitarian Church in Los Alamos.
