The super squad matchup between the Los Alamos and Del Norte high school Varsity Volleyball teams Sept. 28 at Griffith Gym had the Toppers going into the game with a record of 5-8 against Del Norte’s 6-2.

In Girl’s Varsity Volleyball, two teams play to 25, needing to win by two, and the team winning three games out of five gets the victory. In the first game, Del Norte served first with Los Alamos smacking down the first point. The two teams swapped point for point until Los Alamos gained a five point lead ending it 25-20 taking the first game win.

With home court advantage and the first game under their belt, Topper victory seemed bright. Unfortunately in a snap Del Norte took the second game by beating the Toppers 25-23.

The Toppers were not about to back down after losing such a close game, but dread struck once more in the third game. The Toppers never backed down matching Del Norte point for point during the match. Kaitlin Bennett’s several kills helped lift the Toppers spirit and provided a lead for the team. Yet again it just wasn’t enough and the Toppers suffered another close loss 26-24.

The Toppers were at a disadvantage as the fourth game proceeded, and even though they showed burning spirit, they fell short losing 25-19. After the clash, the Knights came away with a 3-1 victory.

After the game, Bennett said, “We played really well as a team and fought hard each game.”

Hopefully the Toppers will get back at it and sweep away with a victory in their next game.
