ART News:

SANTA FE — For one unforgettable weekend, Sept. 27-29, at the studio of Candyce Garrett, Taos will become the epicenter of sculptural brilliance. From Garrett’s monumental granite forms to Cliff Fragua’s culturally resonant pieces and Randolph’s elegant, contemporary sculptures, each is a “rock star” master in their own right and, between them, they have 150 years of experience in turning stone into art.

This once-in-a-lifetime group show offers art enthusiasts and collectors an unparalleled opportunity to view a diverse selection of extraordinary stone sculptures, engage with these nationally renowned artists, and gain insights into their creative processes.

With three wildly different styles, each offer a unique perspective on this most difficult of sculptural mediums:

  • Candyce Garrett is acclaimed as the sole female monumental granite sculptor worldwide. With a portfolio that includes private, corporate, and museum collections, as well as public art installations, Garrett’s work is a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. Her sculptures, carved from the very essence of stone, embody a timeless elegance and innovative spirit. Garrett lives and works in Taos.
  • Cliff Fragua is the only Native American sculptor with an installation in Statuary Hall at the United States Capitol and his “Grace of Time” took a First Award in the Stone Representational Sculpture category at the 2024 Indian Market. Fragua’s work is celebrated for its cultural depth and narrative richness, reflecting his profound connection to Native American heritage. Fragua lives and works in Jemez Pueblo.
  • Somers Randolph brings a distinguished Princeton education and an exquisite carving technique to his art. Renowned for utilizing stone to create fluid, abstract forms that challenge conventional boundaries, Randolph’s work engages the viewer through its striking balance of movement and stillness and his sculptures are featured in prestigious private and corporate collections. Randolph lives and works in Santa Fe.

“Journeys in Stone is my ‘bucket list show’ and I thought I should do it sooner rather than later,” said Garrett, the show’s organizer. “Cliff, Somers, and I hope to offer visitors an inspiring and enriching experience, showcasing the transformative power of stone.”
