On May 24, 2025, Jonathan Dowell of Los Alamos completed his 15th ride in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic. This grueling ride from Durango to Silverton, Colo., is nominally 50 miles, climbing 6,000 vertical feet across Coal Bank and Molas Passes with two breathtaking descents. This year’s effort also marks Dowell’s 50th year living with type-1 diabetes mellitus. ‘I want to inspire people to succeed regardless of whatever challenges they face,’ Dowell said. ‘I also want to thank Dr. Bernstein of Regional Endocrinology Associates for giving me technology and expertise to live with diabetes, Dr. Marvil of Taos Orthopaedic Institute for the miraculous total hip arthroplasty last September, and my wife, Tessa, who has made everything possible for 35 years.’ Photo by Tessa Dowell
