John Craven Arrested At 10,000 Waves Spa

John Craven

Staff Report

John Craven, 35, of Los Alamos is has been ordered to remain in jail pending a preliminary hearing in Santa Fe Magistrate Court after racking up seven charges during an Oct. 2 visit to 10,000 Waves Spa.

Craven appeared Oct. 19 before Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer in First Judicial Court under a petition to revoke his probation in a 2014 case where he was found guilty of residential burglary and larceny of more than $2,500 and granted a conditional discharge.

Deputy District Attorney Kent Wahlquist asked for Craven’s probation to be revoked because of the new charges and because he has failed to pay probation costs as ordered by the Court. Records from Adult Parole and Probation officials indicate that Craven has also violated his probation several other times by testing positive for drugs and alcohol, failing to complete community service hours and having an unopened beer can at his residence.  Craven is scheduled for an evidentiary hearing Nov. 28 on the probation violation.

Oct. 2, Santa Fe Sheriff’s Deputy Antonio Lopez responded to a report that a man was breaking into lockers at 10,000 Waves Spa and that he was pretending to use his cell phone while employees were in the locker room.

When he arrived, Lopez’s report says he noticed a man fitting the description given by staff running down the side of a hill being chased by three other men. He placed his patrol unit in reverse and observed the man run in front of it, fall and roll on the ground. The man got up, looked at Lopez and began to walk away, so Lopez exited his vehicle and advised him to stop several times.

The man continued to walk the report says so Lopez drew his duty weapon and demanded that he stop and get on the ground, which he did. Lopez handcuffed him, searched him and read him his Miranda warning. The man, then identified as Craven, said he didn’t know what was going on, that he was just there to go to the spa.

Deputy Eric Eccles responded at that point and was informed by the general manager that Craven was acting very suspiciously and that he hadn’t paid for services at the spa. When he told Craven law enforcement had been called, Craven pulled out a spa membership card, threw it at him, pushed him to the ground and took off running.

In a backpack close to where Craven was apprehended deputies found a crow bar Lopez believed was used to open three lockers. Deputies also found a wallet belonging to a spa patron.

Craven was booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility where he was charged with aggravated burglary, possession of burglary tools, larceny, falsely obtaining services or accommodations, criminal damage to property, resisting arrest and tampering with evidence. His preliminary examination on these charges is scheduled for Nov. 1.

State court records show Craven was charged Oct. 6 with theft of a credit card and fraudulent use of a credit card in Santa Fe Magistrate Court. He faces a preliminary examination on those charges Nov. 8.
