Fifty is looking good in White Rock and Espanola, as the local Jazzercise programs nationally celebrate a 50th anniversary and a theme for May called, “Strong as a Mother.” The fun phrase can be seen on t-shirts, tanks and other apparel.

To celebrate, the White Rock program is offering a free week of Jazzercise May 1-31 for those who would like to try it out, with the exception of May 13 and May 16.

According to owner andinstructor Tana Beverwyk-Abouda, Jazzercise uses the latest music and physiology research, which makes it attractive to younger generations, but because of its long-standing reputation and cultural icon status, it is very attractive to older generations as well.

All Jazzercise instructors are able to modify workouts to best fit everyone in the room. The exceptional training and quality for instructors has allowed the program to succeed for 50 years.

“Ironically, most people worry about not being in-shape enough when walking into a fitness class or gym,” Beverwyk-Abouda said. “Our classes are filled with diversity: young, old, thin, thick, coordinated or two-left-feet and everyone is having a blast and getting a great workout.”

The most important part for her Beverwyk-Abouda said is that new arrivals don’t get intimidated before they even walk in the door.

While the more than 100 Jazzercise members are mostly females, the occasional male does join in. The classes incorporate a range of musical styles including; hip hop, country, Latin, pop, alternative, blues, jazz and more.

The local programs continue to offer YouthFit, a free membership for both young men and women, ages 16-21. The effort attracted almost 60 young ladies to increase their fitness goals and one is now being certified as an instructor.

The White Rock monthly pass is $40, and classes are offered twice a week in White Rock and 14 times per week in Espanola. The pass is universal, which means if you are on travel, you can drop by a class anywhere, anytime. If you work out just twice a week, it only costs $5 per class. The Espanola Fitness Studio is devoted to Group Fitness Classes, Personal Training, yoga, Pilates, barre, Zumba, Tai Chi and Silver Sneakers and more.

They offer training for athletic goals, chronic disease management and post physical therapy exercise with seven fitness professionals.

Anyone who joins the program during May in White Rock receives half off the first month fee.

The White Rock classes are 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at White Rock Presbyterian Church, 310 Rover Blvd.
