James F. Ellison Announces Intent To Run For State Treasurer Of New Mexico

James F. Ellison

STATE News:

ALBUQUERQUE — James F. Ellison, a former commissioner with the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (NMPRC), announced March 12 his decision to drop out of the race for governor and enter the race for State Treasurer of New Mexico.

In a statement announcing his decision, Ellison spoke of the need for strong investment credentials and professional oversight of investment decisions.

“New Mexico faces real challenges—rising energy costs and decreasing affordability, lackluster economic growth, and an educational system that delivers poor outcomes. I entered the governor’s race because I believe this state deserves better leadership.”

“After careful reflection and conversations with top leaders within the party, I am withdrawing from the race for governor and announcing my candidacy for State Treasurer. As a CFA® charterholder, I have a rigorous understanding of investment analysis, portfolio management, and ethical practice. As a former utility regulator, I reviewed and approved multimillion-dollar rate case applications—scrutinizing financial statements, cost structures, and investment plans with the same discipline the State Treasurer’s office demands every day.

“The State Treasurer’s office manages your money. It should be led by someone with real financial credentials and analytical experience—not political connections. I have spent my career doing exactly that kind of work, and I am ready to bring that discipline and accountability directly to bear on behalf of every New Mexican.”

Ellison holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is a globally recognized professional certification for investment and finance professionals.

Ellison, the only Republican to declare his candidacy for the office, is in the process of gathering the required number of signatures to become a qualified candidate for State Treasurer.
