International Folk Art Market (IFAM) Series: Folk Art Connections – experience the tradition of Mexican cartonería — the centuries-old art of sculpting with paper and paste — in an immersive workshop led by a master artist, Christian Godoy Rodríguez from Silao, Guanajuato.
This is a chance to create a cartonería figure while learning the history, symbolism, and techniques behind one of Mexico’s most colorful folk art forms.
What to Expect:
- Over the 4-hour-long workshop, participants will learn the traditional methods of cartonería unique to Silao, Guanajuato;
- Shape, design, and paint your own papier-mâché figure;
- Hear stories about the cultural significance and impact of this craft;
- Work alongside an artisan and community in this intimate, small-group setting, and
- All materials provided. Participants will receive a workshop kit including paints, brushes, and other essentials to complete their piece — even after the session ends.
