Staff Report

Confirmation was celebrated for 44 youth of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Canyon Road. The Very Rev. John Cannon, Chancellor of the Archdiocese celebrated the sacrament with assistance from Fr. Glenn Jones of IHM Sunday, May 3, during a special service.

In the Catholic faith, there is a close relationship between the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. While Confirmation is a distinct and complete sacrament in its own right, its purpose is to perfect in an individual that which was begun in Baptism. In a sense, people are baptized in order to be confirmed.

With the onset of adolescence, a child begins to assume, progressively more and more, the responsibilities of adulthood. He begins to see his place in the total family picture and in the community at large. Similarly, the confirmed Christian begins to see more clearly his responsibility to Christ for his neighbor. He becomes deeply concerned with the welfare of Christ-in-the-world, which is the Church, and the welfare of Christ-in-his-neighbor. It is in this sense that Confirmation is a spiritual “growing up.”

The essential part of the Confirmation rite is when the bishop, chancellor or priest places his hand upon the head of each individual, traces the sign of the cross on the person’s forehead—having first dipped his thumb in the holy oil called chrism—and says, “Be sealed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.”

Fr. Jones explains that St. Thomas Aquinas calls Confirmation ‘the Sacrament of the fullness of grace,’ meaning that the graces of Baptism reach their proper end and perfection in the reception of Confirmation. The Sacrament is conferred in order to give the baptized the fullness of the Holy Spirit, the fullness of grace, and the fullness of gifts needed to live the Christian vocation in the world. In receiving Confirmation, the (confirmed) takes on the same role as the Apostles in spreading the Faith.
