Historical Society November Lecture: Rachel Robbins

HISTORICAL SOCIETY News:

The Los Alamos Historical Society announces its November free lecture, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11,
in the Pajarito Room of historic Fuller Lodge.

The evening will feature author Rachel Robbins, whose historical fiction book, The Sound of a Thousand Stars, is loosely based on the life of her grandparents, who worked in Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project.

Copies of her book are available now in the Museum Shop and will also be available for purchase at the event.

Robbins received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a tenured assistant professor at Malcolm X College in Chicago. A visual artist and two-time Pushcart Prize-nominated writer, her paintings have materialized on public transit, children’s daycare centers, and Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. She is the author of In Lieu of Flowers and The Sound of a Thousand Stars. She lives in Chicago with her husband, children, and Portuguese Water Dog.

The Sound of a Thousand Stars brings to life wartime Los Alamos through the eyes of Alice Katz, a young Jewish physicist, and Caleb Blum, a poor Orthodox Jew working in the explosives division. Inspired by Robbins’ grandparents, these characters confront the moral challenges, personal sacrifices, and relentless urgency of the race to build a weapon that could end the war. The novel explores love in desperate times, the consequences of our choices, and the indelible roles ordinary people play in shaping history.

The Los Alamos Historical Society extends its sincere appreciation to Enterprise Bank & Trust for its generous sponsorship of the 2025-2026 Lecture Series and ongoing commitment to the programs and initiatives of the Historical Society.

The Historical Society appreciates the community’s continued support and looks forward to seeing the public on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
