HILLTOPPER News:

The Los Alamos High School swimming teams captured both the girls’ and boys’ District 1 team titles at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center Friday and Saturday.

The girls’ team scored 491 points to outpace St. Michael’s (356.5 points) and Farmington’s (307points).

The boys’ team amassed 489 points, ahead of Piedra Vista’s (227points) and Farmington’s (226 points).  St. Michael’s, whom the Hilltopper boys edged by two points last year, slipped to seventh with 189 points.

The Hilltoppers took first place honors in 18 of the meet’s 24 events. Los Alamos swimmers also claimed eight of the 10 new district records.

Sophomore Jessica Moore touched first in the 200 individual medley in a district-record setting 2:16.37.  The old record of 2:17.03 was set by Hilltopper Jennifer Mooday in 2010.  It was Moore’s first entry in the event this season.

Moore later won the 100 breast stroke in a personal best of 1:08.88, a time which moves her up to the sixth performer on the All-Time Hilltoppers list. It also bested the district record set of 1:12.03 set by her sister, Natalia Moore, in 2010.

Sophomore Niamh Short doubled in the 50 and 100 freestyles, winning in state-meet-qualifying speeds of 26.02 and 56.08, respectively.

Sophomore Caemlyn Tripp topped the field in the 500 freestyle, grabbing a spot in the high school state championships. Tripp, who had earlier sung the national anthem to open the district meet, led the field from the start and achieved personal bests in the 100 and 200 freestyles.

The Hilltopper boys 200 freestyle relay team, composed of all seniors, finished their district careers in style by breaking the district record. The quartet of Chris Rohlev, Max Reidys, Nick Torres and Michael Moore sliced through the course in 1:34.60, crushing the old mark of 1:38.18 set by St. Michael’s in 2009.

Moore continued his unbeaten streak, taking first in the 200 and 500 freestyles by wide margins.  Moore, a senior distance specialist, has now won 10 straight individual races this season in five different events. Both his 200 and 500 times eclipsed district records; he lopped nearly 24 seconds off the previous 500 mark.

Isabelle Runde outpaced the field in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.96. The versatile junior later teamed up with Short, Jesse Liechty and Moore to break the district record in the meet’s final event, the 400 freestyle relay.

Freshman Alana Goodwin qualified for the state meet with a personal best of 1:05.81 in her specialty, the 100 backstroke, after placing second to Runde.

Max Reidys edged Farmington’s Trenton Grossheim in the 100 butterfly stroke by a tenth of a second.  The Toppers’ Chris Rohlev picked up a state standard in finishing a close third.

Sophomore Kaan Unal captured the 100 freestyle for the Toppers, just ahead of teammate Alex Jaegers.

Senior Madeleine Le Scouarnec sprang to the one meter diving win with 396.05 points.

Senior Connor Schultz, a five-year letterman for the Hilltoppers, presented seniors from all the district teams with Valentine’s Day roses as they closed out their high school swimming careers.

The state high school swimming and diving championships will be held Feb. 20-21 in Albuquerque. A team of 15 girls and 10 boys will represent the Hilltoppers.
