The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys’ lacrosse team dropped a 9-4 decision Wednesday afternoon at Dara Jones Field in White Rock. A split squad consisting of players from Cibola and Bosque High Schools of Albuquerque’s Westside found their rhythm midway through the second quarter to earn the win.

The Hilltoppers played even with the Westside super team for the first 12 minutes, finishing the quarter tied at one.

The Cougars’ size and speed was too much for Los Alamos to handle, and the Cibola/Bosque squad jumped to a 5-2 halftime lead.

Hilltoppers Ryder Devenhall and Ben Moulton each scored a goal in the second half, Unfortunately, Los Alamos wasn’t able to slow the Cougars down, giving up four goals in the half.

The Hilltoppers’ next home game is April 14 at Dara Jones Field in White Rock with a 3 p.m. game against the Duke City Lacrosse team.

Honoring A Teammate

During halftime, the Los Alamos Hilltopper Lacrosse team honored former teammate Trevor Matuszak, who died in a tragic hiking accident in White Rock canyon last July.

Matuszak played hockey and lacrosse for Los Alamos High School before graduating in 2015 and attending New Mexico State University to study Athletic Training and Sports Medicine, following in the footsteps of his father Mick, who is the head athletic trainer at Los Alamos High School.

Matuszak was described as “adventurous and free spirited” and always full of laughter and genuinely happy. The Hilltoppers presented the Matuszak family with Trevor’s jersey.
