What better way to celebrate National Trails Day than to hike? Local trail expert Craig Martin is leading a hike 10:15 a.m. Saturday, June 4, up Water Canyon to the meadow, where hikers can enjoy running water, flowers, and interesting trail stories.
This free hike is great for kids with a bit of hiking experience. The hike is about two miles round trip with around 400 feet of elevation gain.
The Water Canyon hike is limited to 20 participants. To participate, register online at www.peecnature.org. Afterward, meet Craig and other hikers at the nature center 10:15 a.m. on June 4. Bring water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, and good hiking shoes or boots.
Martin is the former Los Alamos County Open Space Specialist. He is a writer, musician and avid hiker. His books such as Los Alamos Place Names, Valle Grande, A History of the Baca Location No. 1, and 100 Hikes in New Mexico have helped preserve the history of the area and acquaint people with the importance of the landscape and its uses. The Los Alamos Trails app is a result of his many years of exploring.
Hikers meet at 10:15 a.m. at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road and carpool to the trailhead. Registration is required. Attendance is free for everyone in honor of National Trails Day.
