SPORTS News:

Gymnastics fans can see the best female competitors in the state in action later this month when High Flyers Gymnastics hosts the Dreamcatcher Invitational.

Scheduled for Feb. 22-24 at the Santa Fe Convention Center, the annual gymnastics meet draws young women from across the state and region to compete for individual and team honors. This year’s meet will start Friday night and continue throughout the weekend, ending late Sunday afternoon. In all, spectators will have 16 sessions to choose from, starting Friday with the youngest Level 2 competitors, age five and up, through the most advanced Junior Olympic-level athletes on Saturday night.

Twenty-five teams from New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado will be attending the meet. 780 competitors representing teams from Boulder, Durango, and Telluride, Colorado; Amarillo, Austin, and El Paso, Texas as well towns and cities throughout New Mexico plan to attend.

Audiences will be treated to a traditional Native American hoop dance performance by the Pojoaque Youth Hoop dancer Saturday at 5 p.m. Hoop dancers create images of animals, plants and the energy of life using hoops. Following the competition on Saturday night, adults are invited to get into the act. During a  free exhibition, ‘mature’ gymnasts put on a fun, comedic show of their gymnastics skills. High Flyers graduating senior, Ashley Bustos, will also be honored at the meet.

This is the 4th year High Flyers Gymnastics has hosted the meet, which has grown into the largest women’s meet in New Mexico. The gym, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, relies on community volunteers and support to run the meet and uses the proceeds to support its gymnastics programs in Los Alamos. Admission for the meet is $15 adult ($5 for kids under 12) which includes an all-weekend pass.
