Hannemann Music: One-Stop Shop For All Things Music

Richard Hannemann

CHAMBER News:

Richard Hannemann, an accomplished musician, traveled from California in 2005 to promote his musical talents in his hometown of Los Alamos.

At the time, Los Alamos Music was the only music store in town, and the owner was looking to retire. The first iteration of this business was established in 1947 as Scott’s Music on Sycamore from the owner’s home. Since then, the business changed hands only once prior to Hannemann purchasing it in 2007, when he took over the business in part to reestablish roots in Los Alamos and taught himself piano tuning and other services based on a need in the community.

Shortly after purchasing the business, he became an authorized Conn Selmer dealer, which he sells from his home. “Summer is the best time to look for instruments for your kids,” Hannemann says for students joining band class. “If you don’t want to purchase one immediately, rent one for a year first or buy an instrument that has been gently used.”

Although Hannemann does not utilize a store-front, Hannemann Music is a full-line music store, providing an extensive list of services including piano tuning, regulation, repair, and restoration; general instrument repair; instrument sales, as well as instrument parts and supplies; instrument rentals, including band, orchestra, and guitar; and live performances with his guitar. Notable local performance locations include former Los Alamos restaurant Fleur de Lys, Pig & Fig Café, and recently “Los Alamos County Day” at The Roundhouse.

Hannemann Music is a home-based business with “everything but the store-front,” he jokes. He is currently working to tune and regulate the Fuller Lodge Steinway and Kawai pianos.

Correction June 21, 2023: The original version of this article incorrectly stated that Hannemann purchased Los Alamos Music in 2007. Hannemann was interested in reestablishing roots in town, so in 2007, with the help and blessing of the owner, Hannemann picked up where Los Alamos Music left off in order to keep a thriving music store alive in Los Alamos. He then taught himself piano tuning and other services based on a need he saw in the community.
