The National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce and the City of Albuquerque announce a series of events July 23 and 24 featuring Gustavo Arellano and Lalo Alcaraz.
Entitled “Gustavo Arellano and Lalo Alcaraz’s Two-Night Stand,” the series of events will all take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, beginning at 6 p.m., July 23 for “Adult Night at the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum.”
Arellano is the editor of OC Weekly, an alternative newspaper in Orange County, Calif., author of Orange County: A Personal History and Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America. Arellano is a lecturer with the Chicana and Chicano Studies department at California State University, Fullerton, and a consulting producer on FOX’s animated show, Bordertown.
He writes “¡Ask a Mexican!,” a nationally syndicated column in which he answers any and all questions about America’s largest minority.
Alcaraz is the creator of the syndicated daily comic strip, “La Cucaracha,” seen in the Los Angeles Times and other papers nationwide. Alcaraz is also a consulting producer and writer for the upcoming television animated show Bordertown and has authored several books. He is also “Jefe In Chief” of satirical website pocho.com, co-host of KPFK Radio’s satirical talk show, “The Pocho Hour of Power,” broadcast in Los Angeles.
Guests will mingle outside of the Art Museum, enjoy Pop Fizz concessions and good company, and then head inside for a tour of the NHCC Art Museum lead by the witty and insightful Arellano and Alcaraz for an unforgettable and very “adult” night amidst the artwork. Cost for this event is $5, plus food and drink available for purchase.
Next, Arellano and Alcaraz will offer a book reading over a luncheon at 12-1:30 p.m., July 24 in the NHCC’s Salon Ortega. Professionals and aspiring writers and artists alike will enjoy a Pop Fizz catered lunch with Arellano and Alcaraz, complete with readings and discussions of their published literature. Cost for this event is $15, including food, and books will also be available for purchase onsite.
Finally, at 7 p.m. July 24 in the NHCC’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts, Arellano and Alcaraz will present an exclusive sneak peak of the new television series “Bordertown,” to premier on FOX in the fall. Audience members will also have the opportunity to hear from Arellano and Alcaraz what it’s like to be one of a handful of Latino writers in Hollywood, through a discussion to be moderated by Associated Press journalist Russell Contreras. Cost for this event is $5, with concessions available for purchase beforehand.
All proceeds from ticket sales will support the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s 2016 Summer Institutes for youth.
