Gruninger: Reasons To Focus And What’s A Session Like?

Last week I shared with you about Inner Relationship Focusing or Focus Coaching. Focusing can be beneficial for almost any situation you are going through in your life or something that has happened in your past. It can be used to work through something or to explore issues or concerns you can’t seem to resolve.

Focus Coaching is a gentle somatic practice that allows you to connect to your body’s wisdom with non-judgemental awareness. It involves going inside to explore and inquire for answers that you may not find by thinking alone

Here are a few reasons to explore Focus Coaching:

  • You have difficulty making decisions
  • You are feeling stuck physically, mentally or emotionally
  • You are living with chronic pain
  • You are experiencing grief
  • You want to develop healthier eating, exercise or meditation habits
  • You are desiring a more meaningful relationship with yourself
  • You are desiring a more meaningful relationship with other people in your life
  • You have difficulty listening to yourself
  • You need support making a decision or determining what is most important to you

What is a Focusing Session Like?

When you come for a Focusing Session, you get to choose how it unfolds. You might lie down with a blanket over you or choose to sit or walk around. You might ask me to lead you through some breathing or gente yoga/somatic movement. I will ask if you want to work on a specific issue or see what wants your attention. I will lead you with guided imagery, meditation or gentle movement and a body scan to bring you into the body as a starting point. As you share with me what you are noticing or feeling, I will reflect back and make suggestions for connecting with what you are experiencing, giving it space and acknowledgement. You will be guided to keep whatever it is “company”, explore what it has to share and learn what it needs.

In a Focusing Session, everything is allowed and given space. Nothing is denied, shut down, shut off or ignored. All parts are accepted and acknowledged. You and I will work to get in touch and befriend the parts of you that keep you from moving forward and feeling fully alive.

My job is to create a safe space for your exploration. I may invite you to take worksheets home for additional inquiry or provide you with guidelines for continuing the work on your own.

I bring compassion, openness, integrity and love into each session with a client. Together we will be curious about the process of working to explore what is interesting, where there is connection, where there is conflict, where there is need for celebration and how to move forward.
