The community-wide grand opening for Unquarked The Wine Bar in downtown Los Alamos is set for noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. The event includes live music 5-8 p.m., and appetizers created by local restaurants.
The wine room owners will be on hand to welcome everyone to their new venue at 145 Central Park Square including Tony Black of Black’s Smuggler Winery, Jesse and Michele Padberg of Vivác Winery and Jim Fish of Anasazi Fields Winery.
Fish is a poet and will read a special poem for the winter solstice at the Dec. 20 grand opening.
“And beginning Feb. 22, we will host our first ‘Poets on the Hill’ event from noon to 4 p.m. and continue this event on the 3rd Sunday of each month thereafter,” Fish said.
In addition to being a poet and owning Anasazi Fields Winery, Fish is an accomplished wood carver. His work and that of two other Placitas artists, oil and pastel painter by Meg Leonard and ceramic and glass mosaic artist Lynx Lightning will be on display inside the new wine room.
“We are really looking forward to making this a place not only for wine and food but also a cultural center with the art and poetry making it a fun and interesting place,” Fish said. “We want to give people lots of excuses to come in here and spend some time.”
Black said the owners each intend to be in the wine room at least once a month, tentatively Thursdays.
“It’s nice to start seeing it all come together,” Black said during an interview Thursday afternoon in the wine room. “The artwork brings everything out in the room and when we start serving wine it’s going to be wonderful,” Black said. “We also plan to host special ‘meet the wine makers’ events, wine pairing dinners and wine education events.”
Operations Manager Veronica Black-Stepp is Black’s sister. She has been making visits around town and talking about UnQuarked The Wine Room.
“We’re so excited to be here,” she said. “Everyone is so friendly and when I go anywhere in town and people ask what I do and I tell them about this, I get nothing but good feedback.”
In preparation for the Dec. 20 grand opening event, Unquarked The Wine Room is hiring part time servers. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have a New Mexico alcohol server certificate. Call 505.688.4745 to apply.
