Local knitters, crotchet fans and other fabric artists were saddened by the closing of Warm Hearts Yarn. Close-Knit Yarn Cooperative to the rescue! Close-Knit will host a Grand Opening Reception 5-8-p.m. today, Thursday, Nov. 1, complete with refresments, games, prizes and more.

Close-Knit is in the former space occupied by Warm Hearts Yarn. They share space with Atomic City Quilting at 1247 Central Ave., Ste. C in Los Alamos. The store is stocked with yarn and supplies and ready to welcome customers.

Store Manager Mary Fellman and some fellow knitters were bemoaning the upcoming demise of Warm Hearts, when someone suggested, “What about a Coop?”

The Coop model allows the new business to be a group effort and spread the work and responsibility around, Fellman said. The Coop has seven full members and a five-member board of directors. Close-Knit will be selling subscriber memberships to the coop for a $50 annual fee, available for $45 at the Grand Opening.

Members will save five percent on most items and a 20 percent discount on classes, as well as other perks, Fellman said.

“The best thing about membership is being part of the decision making,” Fellman said. “We want to know what the community wants.”

Fellman has a retail background and wants to “run the business like a business.”

“We’re a for-profit cooperative, but part of that is pursuing a mission of education,” Fellman said. “I feel pretty passionate about that aspect.”

Currently, knitting and crocheting supplies dominate the stock, but Fellman wants to find out what other fiber craft supplies people need. One such fiber artist is master felter and free-form crochet artist Samuel Buelow. Buelow’s charming felted pumpkins are currently for sale at the store.

Close-Knit is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed Sunday and Monday.

“The best time to get knitting questions answered is Thursday or Friday, but if  someone has a real knitting emergency, I’ll try to help at other times!” Fellman said.

“I want Close-Knit to support local creative people!” Fellman said.
