SANTA FE—Gov. Susana Martinez has issued an executive order for flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Friday, March 27 in honor and mourning of Navajo Nation Police Officer Alex Yazzie.
The full text of the Governor’s executive order:
EXECUTIVE ORDER 2015-004
FLAGS FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF IN HONOR AND MOURNING OF NAVAJO NATION POLICE OFFICER ALEX YAZZIE
WHEREAS, On Thursday, March 19, 2015, Navajo Nation Police Officer and United States Marine Corps veteran Alex Yazzie was killed in the line of duty;
WHEREAS, Officer Yazzie was in pursuit of a domestic violence suspect when he was fatally shot by the perpetrator;
WHEREAS, Officer Yazzie graduated from Crownpoint High School, and went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Marine Corps;
WHEREAS, Officer Yazzie was an officer with the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency starting in 2002, where he enforced environmental regulations for ten years before joining the Navajo Nation Police Department;
WHEREAS, Officer Yazzie chose to dedicate his life to public service as a law enforcement officer and in the United States Marine Corps;
WHEREAS, Officer Yazzie is survived by his wife Miranda and their children;
WHEREAS, Officer Yazzie dedicated his career to service to his country and community through the United States Marine Corps and the Navajo Nation Police Department; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Susana Martinez, Governor of the State of New Mexico, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Laws of the State of New Mexico, do hereby order that all flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, March 27, 2015, the day Officer Yazzie is laid to rest. The thoughts and prayers of the people of New Mexico go out to Officer Yazzie’s loved ones in gratitude for his service and in mourning for their loss.
