Saturday, March 23 the Pajarito Environmental Education Center, area arts organizations and galleries are teaming up to bring a new recycled art event to Los Alamos.
Re-Art will be held at PEEC from 10 a.m.-noon and will feature an art supplies swap, a recycled crafts fair and tons of fun hands-on recycled art activities for everyone to enjoy.
Re-Art will be followed by the film Waste Land, which will be shown at the Reel Deal Theater at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 24.
There are lots of ways to get involved in this event. Have a closet full of art supplies that you thought you might use, but never got around to? Bring them to PEEC and trade them to others.
This part of the event is designed to give artists and creators a chance to mingle and a chance for materials and art treasures to be discovered.
Expect to see everything from paints and paper, beads and craft supplies, to easels and books.

Participants get a chance to help keep art supplies out of the landfill, and maybe discover something new. There is no charge to be a swapper, but a limited number of tables are available, so please contact PEEC to reserve a space.
Artists are doing remarkable things with recycled materials these days, and some of these innovators will be on hand at Re-Art to sell their wares.
Those interested in being vendors should contact PEEC as well to reserve their space. There is a small $10 fee for vendors to help offset the costs of putting on the event.
There will be lots of hands-on activities for those who want to create something of their own. The Los Alamos Arts Council will run an activity called, “Collage de Junque – Everything Can Be Art.”
The Los Alamos County Environmental Services Division will be there to tell all about their new glass recycling program and have a hands-on activity. Many more activities will be added as the date gets closer, and all will be free.
The event will also contain displays of recycled arts and crafts, including recycled instruments made by Mary Grace’s Los Alamos High School students.
Finally, PEEC and the Reel Deal Theater will be showing the fantastic film, Waste Land, at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 24.
This Academy Award Nominee for Best Feature Documentary follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.
There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” — self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage.
However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives.
The film, “offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.” Tickets will be available at the door, and are $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
