Friday’s Leadership Los Alamos Session Focused on Regional Issues

The 2012 class of Leadership Los Alamos participants met at Fire Station 3 in White Rock Friday to learn about issues impacting the region.


“The purpose of this session is to increase knowledge and understanding of our neighboring communities including their accomplishments and challenges,” said County Council Chair/Leadership Los Alamos cofounder Sharon Stover. “We’ll look at their plans for the future and issues of transportation, economic development, indigent and youth to enable our region to be better prepared.”


Los Alamos Police Chief Wayne Torpy is chairing this year’s Leadership Los Alamos program and presented Friday’s leadership discussion.

Los Alamos National Bank hosted the day-long event, which included a multitude of topics.


Los Alamos National Laboratory Executive Director Rich Marquez addressed the widely covered Laboratory funding issue, Executive Director Tony Mortillaro spoke about the North Central Regional Transit District and Executive Director Kathy Keith briefed participants on the Regional Development Corporation.

Indigent health care, youth issues and the Pueblo perspectives also were addressed.


Two panel discussions provided insight into issues and challenges faced by area municipalities.


The local government/regional issues panel included Santa Fe Mayor David Coss, Espanola Mayor Alice Lucero, Taos Commissioner Andrew Chavez, Rio Arriba County Commissioner Alfredo Montoya and Santa Fe County Commissioner Virginia Vigil.


The state government issues panel included Rep. Jim Trujillo, Rep. Roger Magdelena, Rep. Nick Salazar and Sen. Richard Martinez.
