The wildflower bloom this summer is nothing short of spectacular. To help you identify what’s blooming, local naturalists Terry Foxx and Craig Martin have just released the second edition of their definitive “Plants of the Jemez Mountains Volume 2: Wildflowers.”

“It’s the perfect time to take a walk and find dozens of kinds of wildflowers,” Martin said. “Our guide will help you identify and learn more about the species you find.”

The large format book features lavish color photos of more than 600 species of plants found in the Jemez Mountains. Included are detailed drawings by Foxx and the late Dorothy Hoard which focus on key characteristics of each plant species. The descriptions of the plants avoid botanical jargon and are written in clear, understandable language.

Foxx and Martin worked four years to update and expand Foxx’s original plant identification guide, “Flowering Plants of the Southwestern Woodlands” which she co-authored with the late Dorothy Hoard. The first edition sold out in early 2020.

“Plants of the Jemez Mountains: Wildflowers” is only available at the Los Alamos Nature Center operated by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC). All proceeds from sales are donated by Foxx and Martin to benefit PEEC.
