NMDCA News:

New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA) announces that due to Fort Stanton Historic Site’s proximity to the South Fork and Salt wildfires in the Ruidoso and Mescalero areas of Lincoln County, the July 13 event, Fort Stanton Live, has been postponed until the fall.

While the site has not been under imminent fire risk, the emergency needs of the community are essential. Fort Stanton Historic Site supports the emergency and recovery efforts for the surrounding communities.

Held annually on the second Saturday in July in partnership with Fort Stanton Inc., the Historic Site’s friend’s group, Fort Stanton Live, brings costumed interpreters from the nineteenth century to the Fort for a variety of activities, historical presentations, old-time games, performances and vendors. Fort Stanton, Inc. members and Historic Site staff are working on a rescheduled date for the fall.

Check nmhistoricsites.org/fort-stanton later this summer for updates.

While Fort Stanton has remained open and in operation during the past few weeks, the site has pivoted to provide support and a base location for the Lincoln County Fire Department and State Forestry division. The Site continues to offer help and services to the emergency operations.

Conditions are dynamic in Lincoln County and visitors should be considerate of the recovery efforts, including limited lodging due to housing families in the Ruidoso and surrounding areas. We appreciate your understanding and care for the communities affected by fire and flood. For wildfire updates visit www.nm.gov/wildfire-updates/.
