STATE News:
Former United States Sen. Jeff Bingman endorses Democratic nominee Laura M. Montoya for State Treasurer.
“I have known and admired Laura Montoya since she was working for me during my time in the U.S. Senate,” Bingaman said. “She has an impressive record of public service and will make an outstanding State Treasurer for New Mexico. I am proud to endorse her for that position.”
“I admire Sen. Jeff Bingaman’s public service career and privileged to have worked for him,” Montoya said. “He created a team that worked in a bipartisan manner that served, loved, and invested in our state and people. I have been blessed to have great leaders, like Sen. Bingaman, teach me throughout my career by both their actions and their words. I am honored to earn Sen. Bingaman’s endorsement.”
Bingaman served in the US Senate from 1983 to 2013. He also served as New Mexico Attorney General from 1979 to 1983.
Montoya has earned the endorsement of both the Albuquerque Journal and Santa Fe New Mexican, Dolores Huerta, and several other elected officials and community leaders. Montoya would be the first female and woman of color to serve as Treasurer for the state of New Mexico and the first Latina in this country’s history.
As the two-term Sandoval County Treasurer, Montoya represented Sandoval County and New Mexico at the state and national levels, including the National Association of Counties. Montoya was the only New Mexico County official appointed to Vice Chairmanship, serving under 8 different NACo Presidents. Montoya served as Vice-Chair for the Finance, Pension, and Intergovernmental Affairs (FPIGA) Committee, Chair of the Young Elected Officials network called NextGen, and member of the Women of NACo. Montoya earned first placement on the ballot with nearly 60 percent of the vote at the democratic state convention.
Montoya is running against Republican nominee Harry Montoya. The election is Nov. 8.
