For Resident Safety – SFNF Proposing 10-year Shooting Closure Along Caja del Rio

SFNF News:

The Santa Fe National Forest’s Española Ranger District is proposing a 10-year shooting closure along the east boundary of the Caja del Rio, east of Santa Fe, to protect the lives and property of those who live adjacent to the Forest boundary.

Shooting a firearm within the National Forest is allowed; however, in order to protect adjacent property owners, the area has been closed since May 24, 2001. Due to an increase in development on private land near the Forest boundary, there is a greater need to enforce the closure to keep residents safe.

Under the National Environmental Policy Act, long-term closures require an Environmental Assessment (EA) and public involvement. This EA would allow the existing closure to be extended through May 2024. The public is encouraged to review the proposal, proposed action, online and offer comment.

The proposal is available at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/santafe/landmanagement/projects. Additional information, including the supporting documentation for this action can be obtained from District Recreation and Special Uses Staff Lynn Bjorklund, lbjorklund@fs.fed.us, 505.753.7331.

Comments must be submitted/date stamped by April 16, 2013 to Lynn Bjorklund using one of the methods below:

  • Email: comments-southwestern-santafe-espanola@fs.fed.us.
  • Hand deliver or direct mail: Española Ranger District, 1710 N Riverside Dr., Espanola, NM. Hand delivered comments must be delivered during business hours: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Fax: 505.753.9411

Comments should have a direct relationship to the proposed action, and must include supporting reasons for consideration. Only those who submit timely and specific written comments during the comment period will be eligible to file an objection.
