COMMUNITY News:

The community is invited to attend two free recitals in Santa Fe and Los Alamos in the upcoming week, featuring music for flute and piano. Guest flutist Dr. Jeong Hoon Lee, currently based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, will partner with pianist Dr. Haewon Yang, a Los Alamos resident.

The first concert will be 5:30-6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 , as a part of the TGIF Concert Series at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe at 208 Grant St. in Santa Fe. The program will feature Moonshine Ride by S. Kim, a contemporary new-age style ballade, as well as the monumental Sonata in A major by C. Franck, a demanding virtuosic Romantic masterpiece for both the piano and the flute.

The second concert will be 12-1 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, as a part of the Los Alamos Arts Council’s Daytime Performance Series at Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos. This program will include the pieces from the previous concert, as well as pieces by Clara Schumann, the 19th-century virtuoso pianist whose career spanned 60 years, and the wife of Robert Schumann.

Lee is a seasoned performer, winning 1st place in the American Protégé International Competition and the Golden Classical International Music Competition, and has performed at major venues like Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center. He is also an active educator, having been on the faculty of Dallas College – Northlake, and the University of North Texas College of Music. During his time in Northern New Mexico, Lee will also spend time in masterclasses and workshops with the Santa Fe Youth Symphony and the Santa Fe High School Band.

Yang is based in Los Alamos and enjoys an active career as both a teacher and performer. Her debut album featuring the music of American composer Harry Bulow was released in January on Navona Records, and she will play the Saint-Saens 2nd Piano Concerto with the Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra in April 2025.

Lee and Yang are both alumni of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and are looking forward to performing together again after 11 years. Both concerts are free admission, and open to the public.
