LANL News:
The Flanged Tritium Waste Container Radioactive Air Emissions Summary, Volume 2, Environmental Sampling and Expanded Plume Modeling is complete and available to the public.
This second volume to the FTWC final report examines downwind air and soil sampling measurements that were conducted to support the FTWC depressurization operation and presents expanded plume modeling scenarios, looking at different time frames of evaluation, different plume modes, and different age range scenarios.
Volume 1 of the report discussed in detail the execution of the FTWC pressure mitigation project.
Both volumes are available on LANL’s Flanged Tritium Waste Container webpage.
The FTWCs were placed in temporary storage in 2007. The depressurization operation was conducted to relieve any pressure that could have built up over time to ensure transportation would be done safely. None of the four containers had pressure build-up.
The operation to depressurize the four containers began Sept. 15, 2025, and took place over several days.
