…Virtual Online Public Hearing for Petition Set for Tuesday
Los Alamos County will hold a virtual online public hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m. to consider a citizen petition to re-name Minors A Field at Overlook Sports Complex to Hope Field, after local resident Hope Jaramillo.
An impartial committee of citizens, business owners, and Boards and Commission members will consider the request on Tuesday evening, take public comment, and then vote upon a recommendation to forward to the Council for their regular session on Sept. 29.
Those unable to attend the public hearing may email comments before the deadline of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 to lacmanager@lacnm.us and they will be given to the committee.
Hope Jaramillo passed away January 29, 2020. Under County Code, a public hearing must be held prior to naming or re-naming any County facility – or in this case, a field – after a deceased individual, and such a request can only be considered six months or more after the person’s death.

During the hearing, the public may speak “for” or “against” the re-naming of the field for Hope Jaramillo.
The following is the language in the petition regarding the request for renaming the segment, submitted by Robbie Harris, the petitioner. Harris is the Varsity Softball Coach at Los Alamos High School and a Los Alamos County resident:
“Please support renaming Minors A to Hope Field. I ask for your support in renaming Minors A Field at Overlook Sports Complex to Hope Field in memory of Hope Jaramillo who recently passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Hope was a huge supporter of girls softball in Los Alamos and always found a way to volunteer her time to coach Little League and USSSA softball teams. She was instrumental in coordinating activities, designing tournament shirts, acquiring food, and running the concession stand with her husband, Joe, for the annual local high school Junior Varsity softball tournament. She was a significant asset to our softball community as she was the epitome of selflessness, courage and volunteerism.”
