This month, Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad wraps up its iconic Silverton Steam Train excursion, with less than two weeks left to experience fall aboard the historic train.
Recently praised by The New York Times as a top fall train trip, the last steam locomotive to Silverton will depart from Durango Saturday, Oct. 26.
The D&SNGRR, including the Train Museum in downtown Durango, will be closed Oct. 27 through Nov. 21 to prepare for winter. Winter excursions begin Friday, Nov. 22 with The Polar Express™ Train Ride and Cascade Canyon Winter Train.
The Polar Express™ Train Ride: Nov. 22, 2024, to Jan. 4, 2025
Based on Chris Van Allsburg’s best-selling children’s book, this enchanting train ride includes hot cocoa, storytelling, and a visit from Santa, bringing the holiday classic to life for travelers of all ages. The roundtrip journey lasts approximately 65 minutes. However, guests should plan on spending at least 2 hours to enjoy the full experience, including a holiday-themed display at the D&SNGRR Railroad Museum and photos with Santa following the train ride. The Polar Express™ starts Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, and operates most days through Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, with multiple evening departures.
Cascade Canyon Winter Train: Nov. 22, 2024 to May 2, 2025
Historic steam locomotives depart from the Durango Depot and transport passengers back in time through the remote winter landscapes of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. The route travels 26 miles along the Animas River from Durango to Cascade Canyon, revealing some of the railway’s most iconic features, including the Highline, a section of track perched 400 feet above the river. The 5.25-hour round-trip journey includes cozy, heated coaches and a 60-minute stop at scenic Cascade Canyon, where passengers can enjoy a fireside lunch, take photos, or go for a peaceful winter stroll along the Animas River.
