The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) invites the community to a fascinating lecture, “Fluid Geographies”, by University of New Mexico professor Dr. Maria Lane, 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the Los Alamos Nature Center. Admission is free.
Dr. Lane will discuss New Mexico’s long history of water management, connecting modern policies and technologies to their historical roots. Drawing from her 2024 book, Fluid Geographies, she will explore the emergence of scientific water management during New Mexico’s late territorial period, examining how environmental changes, settlement policies, and water disputes shaped today’s practices.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Lane is a professor of Geography & Environmental Studies at the University of New Mexico and Dean of Graduate Studies. She specializes in the historical geographies of natural resource management and has authored two books, Fluid Geographies (2024) and Geographies of Mars (2011).
